Our Year 7 students participated in a memorable Indigenous Incursion, providing them with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and traditions.
Throughout the day, students were immersed in rich cultural experiences, listening to the powerful sounds of the yidaki (often still referred to as the 鈥渄idgeridoo鈥) and learning about its cultural significance. They discovered that the instrument is traditionally known as the yidaki in Indigenous communities, with the term 鈥渄idgeridoo鈥 being a name given later by the white colonisers. They gained insight into the importance of using culturally appropriate names and recognising the diversity of Aboriginal languages and traditions.
Students also explored a fascinating collection of traditional Aboriginal artefacts, including shields, hunting boomerangs, woven baskets and other significant cultural objects. They learned about the purpose and importance of these artefacts and gained valuable insight into the knowledge, skills and traditions passed down through generations.
One of the highlights of the incursion was storytime with the visiting Elders, who shared traditional stories celebrating the deep connection between people, Country and culture. Inspired by these stories, students created their own artworks using traditional Aboriginal symbols to communicate personal stories and ideas through visual storytelling.
The incursion was an engaging and meaningful learning experience that encouraged respect, curiosity and creativity, while helping students develop a greater appreciation of Australia鈥檚 rich First Nations cultures and artistic traditions.
